A Masterpiece: A Future Heirloom

When I first received this book in the mail, I anticipated a beautifully illustrated and written biography on Pope Francis. What I didn’t expect was this absolutely glorious collection of over 250 rarely seen photographs of the Pope, many of them full page and double page spread. The book is filled with facsimiles of documents and pullouts in over 50 pages. First skimming over the book, I had to recheck the price in unbelief that it was only $50.00 for this one of a kind biography that is the only book of Pope Francis that is Vatican-Endorsed.

The books is very big measuring about 10 ½ x 12 “ and 2 ½ “ in thickness which may make it a pretty thick book for a coffee table book. This book also has it’s own cardboard book case cover to protect the actual book.

Some of the documents in this book look so authentic, being printed in the color and size, and medium of the actual documents. To say there are 138 pages in the book is hard to imagine because that doesn’t include the inserts containing facsimiles of Pope Francis’s birth and baptismal certificate, letters, pamphlets, handwritten letters by Pope Francis, postcards, holy cards, little prayer books, song booklets, reprinted magazine articles - to name a few. Many of them are written in the language that that Pope Francis used. These inserts are true to size of the actual ones so when you open an insert, you get from 1 to 10 or more various pieces in each insert. There could be up to and more than 50 individual pieces (such as letters, booklets, cards) that are removable from the book itself.

There are 6 chapters in the book, which cover from the beginning of his birth to his childhood and young adult life to priest, bishop, cardinal and present day pope. The book is masterfully designed and written. After reading the contents you will feel like you know Pope Francis like you’ve never imagined. You will know his whole life. It is a masterpiece, in my opinion, and would make such a superb gift for anyone who loves Pope Francis and wants to learn more about him. It is a masterpiece and will be a future heirloom in your household.

This is the ultimate 'coffee table book' for devout Catholics, or for anyone who admires Pope Francis. The detailed biography, documents, and photos are presented in a box set, and the book is very large - enough so that one doesn't squint to enjoy the photos.

Without including spoilers, I'll say that Jorge Bergoglio has a fascinating, multi-dimensional degree of talents and specialisations, many of which would be fresh knowledge for many of us. His life story is that of a remarkable man.

This book could use better editing

I am no expert on Dracula but my historical sensibilities have been offended by several serious errors in the text. Here are just two examples: on pages 9-10 Mr. Trow writes:
"...Oliver Cromwell, whose head ... may or may not have been separated from his body..."
It is a well-known fact that Cromwell's head definitely had been separated from his body, and found its lonely grave only in 1960.
On page 123 we find the following fragment about Jan Zizka:
"...he had fought for the Teutonic Order against the Poles...
Losing an eye at Tannenberg in 1410 fighting for Wenceslas..."
These two incomplete sentences contain four mistakes. First, Zizka fought FOR the Poles AGAINST the Teutonic Order. Second, he did so at the battle of Tannenberg in 1410, therefore he couldn't fight there for Wenceslas. Third, the unnamed battle from the first sentence and the battle of Tannenberg/Grunwald are one and the same event. Fourth, Zizka lost an eye in his adolescence.
In short, this book could really benefit from knowledgeable editing.

Vampirism and the Real Dracula

Although the book has several chapters about vampirism and Bram Stoker's Dracula, the remaining chapters about Vlad Tepes are very detailed and a good read. Vlad surely was one of the most cruel tyrants ever and his atrocities are described with much detail. Contemporaries wrote about the "untold abuses, sad murders and mutilations by the cruel tyrant Dracula" and the author discusses the sources and their reliability by their level of interest in blackening Vlad. According to Trow, many of Vlad Dracula's acts can be interpreted as efforts to enforce his own moral code upon his country and to strengthen and modernise the central government at the expense of the nobility, because they had repeatedly undermined the power of the Wallachia's rulers (and buried alive his elder brother).

An interesting section describes the `usual' way of impalement and the most likely way used by Vlad in the case of mass impalements or when a mother was impaled together with her baby.

Key for Marriage

At first i was disappointed b/c the book it's small in size and not at all what i expected. However, powerful things can come in small packages. The nuggets and wisdom in this "small" book have been gems in my life. I am putting into practice many things that i've read in the book. I'm excited for our marriage b/c of the changes i'm making after reading this book.

An excellent guide

88 pages packed, with vital information you will need to know if you are going to give yourself the best chance at OASC. The information and guidance is commensurate with that given to me first hand by RAF Officers who presently hold a commission and who have recently been through the selection process.

Written in a practical style, this is by far the best and most practical guide I have come across to date and the natural delivery of sequential information makes this book surprisingly difficult to put down.

Absolutely invaluable!

ALAN DEAN FOSTER has written in a variety of genres, in-cluding hard science fiction, fantasy, horror, detective, western, historical, and contemporary fiction. Back before Star Wars got domesticated

I read this book in 1978, when I was seven years old, and I thought it was terrific. I read it again three years ago, and I still think it's terrific. I'm delighted to see that it's still (back?) in print, because I think it has a heck of a lot more spirit and energy than most of the Star Wars franchise drivel being pumped out nowadays.
Reading through the other reviews I see a lot of "I liked it a lot, but"--followed by some complaint about an inconsistency with the subsequently established Star Wars canon. I know that there's a bit of popular mythology out there that George Lucas had the entire Star Wars series plotted out before he put the first one on celluloid, but I'm here to tell you it ain't so (check out Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays by Laurent Bouzereau for the skinny on this). That is, there was no way for Alan Dean Foster to know that Luke, Leia, and Vader were family, or that Vader was a cyborg under all that armor, or that Leia and Han were going to get romantic, or that Luke would get his lightsaber-wielding butt stomped in the next movie, or that Leia would develop beyond the sarcastic damsel in distress we saw in the first movie.
Which is all to say that DESPITE what you read in these other reviews, Foster actually does a pretty terrific job of making this consistent with the characters AS THEY ARE PORTRAYED IN THE FIRST MOVIE. The reason they're different from their portrayals in Empire, Jedi, etc. is that, well, the characterization in the original film was pretty thin. Luke, Leia, Han, Vader--even the droids and Chewbacca--really only developed three dimensional personalities in the second film. So this is a decidedly different Luke and Leia than the ones you're used to, and--swamp planet aside--this doesn't feel like most of the Star Wars that's come since. If the Star Wars that's come since can be compared to Lord of the Rings (epic scope, huge conflict), this is more like one of those original, great Conan novels by Robert E. Howard--well done, fun stuff, but a bit raw.
And THAT'S why you should buy it. ...

THE STAR WARS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN

The first novel to take the adventures of Luke Skywalker beyond what we now call Episode IV: A New Hope, "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" drops Luke and Leia onto a primitive jungle planet where the stranded duo must contend with bizarre alien tribesmen, ravenous monsters, labrynthine caves, and roving bands of Imperial stormtroopers--all the while coming ever closer to the romance early Star Wars fans thought was written in the stars. While fleeing the Empire's soldiers, Luke and Leia learn from a Force-sensitive old woman that the backwater planet they've chanced on is home to a mythical crystal that can give its wielder heretofore unimagined power over the Force itself. But Luke and Leia aren't the only ones in on the revelation: the promise of even greater power lures Darth Vader himself, setting up a spell-binding climax including a lightsaber duel that compares favorably with any the films have offered thus far. Naturally, no novel written in '78 can jive with the Star Wars continuity as the movies have developed it since then, but that's not the author's fault. Alan Dean Foster has been of the world's best sci-fi writers for years, and "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" is first class storytelling. Contitnuity nothwithstanding, this is an outstanding and thoroughly entertaining stand-alone novel. What else matters?

Very interesting...

This book was the first one authorized by Lucasfilm after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope and it is very good. Alan Dean Foster introduced us to a great sidestory with this and he must have helped many people out back in 1978 by tiding them over till the release of The Empire Strikes Back.
The story is interesting enough. Luke and Leia go on a search for the Kaiburr crystal, which is said to make someone indestructible with the Force. Obviously, they have to find it first, to keep it out of the Empire's hands, especially those of Darth Vader.
The best part of this book happens to be the best reason to buy this book: Luke's confrontation with Vader. All I'll say is that there is some great foreshadowing in this meeting. Read it and see what I mean.
Another interesting thing about this book is that it was written in 1978, so Foster only had the first movie to go on. That makes for some interesting interaction between Luke and Leia. Remember, nobody knew they were related yet.
I thoroughly enjoy this book. I'm positive that any Star Wars fan out there would too, so do yourself a favor and buy this excellent book!

Vibrant, vivid illustration and a wonderful tale

The Anansi stories have been handed down through generations of Ashanti culture. This book is a wonderful, vibrant and vivid story for children of all ages. Born in Ghana I left at aged 3, leaving much of the Ghanaian culture behind. At aged 30 I can still remember a song about Anansi the spider, the only remnants left of my native tongue. I was given the Anansi book as a child, it captivated me, I read it over and over again, and it provided a connection to my past. At 16, I spent hours crafting a cushion embroidered an illustration from the book that was a childhood favorite. Sadly, the book was lost and I never thought I could get it again. Now, some 14 years since I last saw the book I can still visualize the pictures and hear the wonderful tale of Anansi the spider, his sons and the moon. I have just bought two copies, one for my niece and one for my two year old daughter. I absolutely cannot wait to read them again and again and pass this memorable story to a new generation.

Anansi Makes Me Laugh...

I am a big fan of the Anansi tales, and the spider's adventures are delightful as well as thought-provoking. For edutainment (educational entertainment) and discussion, I include them in my high school / college level introduction to mythology / humanities survey courses. All ages can enjoy a clever trickster hero who possesses many human qualities, the good and bad--who makes us think about our own deeds and behavior.

In Anansi The Spider: A Tale from the Ashanti, Gerald McDermott retells an Anansi story with warmth, cultural sensitivity, and bright, attention-seizing illustrations. Among the children's books about Anansi, McDermott's efforts stand in a unique place because the text is used sparingly and with great effect, conveying important events only and not burying key ideas in lavish descriptions or dialogues. In this book, the elaborate, geometric illustrations paint the "descriptions" that the text omits.

Features that I like...

The map in the opening that shows the continent of Africa and the country of Ghana. (I'm always happy to see a bit of geography dropped into stories, especially those designed for children.)

The Prologue, which describes the importance of folklore, mythology, and legends. I especially appreciate this statement: "Folklore prepares man for adult life. It places him within his culture."

Rather than beginning the story with the familiar "Once upon a time...," the author uses "Time was..." which is cool! :)

Each of the spider sons in the story is unique in design, appearance, and talent, which makes him easy (and fun) to identify as the tale unfolds. The six sons are See Trouble, Road Builder, River Drinker, Game Skinner, Stone Thrower, and Cushions.

The character of Anansi is rendered with an expressive personality and face while his sons' faces are not shown--just their designs, bodies, and talents. Anansi's face changes emotions based on his experiences, and this would be an excellent teaching element for very young children upon hearing / seeing the story.

A culturally rich story that captures the eye with it's art.

This story captured the attention of 18 pre-schools within a few seconds! Personally, I enjoyed this story, the unique characters and the "trickster" Anansi. The children loved acting out a skit about the 6 sons of Anansi by taping a "spider logo" to their shirt and acting out "cushion", see trouble" and the other brothers. I especially enjoy how McDermott exposes children to the beliefs of other cultures.

an excellent translation of fascinating texts

William Levitan's translation of Abelard's "History of my Calamities" and Abelard and Heloise's "Letter" easily supersedes previous translations of these fascinating twelfth-century texts. In an eminently readable translation, Levitan makes accessible the primary documents of one of the most captivating love affairs of the Middle Ages.

From my own experience, this text is fabulous for classroom use, quickly getting students excited and involved in medieval thought, culture, and letters: cutting-edge theology, heart-breaking romance, shotgun weddings, gruesome castration, groundbreaking monasticism, gorgeous hymns -- this story has it all!

Superior Information on the Conduct of Medieval Christian Life

Abelard & Heloise, The Letters and other Writings, Translated, with Introduction and Notes by William Levitan.

I wish to offer this review as a rebuttal to the reviewer who thought it did not have much to offer aside from some of the poetry.

To be sure, if one has a passing knowledge of the story of Abelard and Heloise, you may expect something different from what is in this volume. All these letters were written after the fateful love affair and ad hoc castration of Abelard, when Abelard is a lecturer in theology at a monastery and Heloise was a prioress at a nearby Abby. Therefore, the lions share of text in the letters deals with matters of how to run a monastery. In that regard, they should be read inconjunction with St. Benedict's rule and Basil the Great's letters on the conduct in a monastery.When the early events in their life are brought up, they appear as object lessons of what not to do, as when Abelard writes, in the fourth letter:

Consider then how appropriately God's justice - or rather, it was God's grace - dragged you against your will to the calling you were not afraid to mock, wanting you to atone for that desecration while wearing the same habit you once profaned, to answere the lie with the truth of the event and correct the falsehood of your pretense.

Since our store of Abelard's writings in English is so thin, these letters often provide insights into his ethical and theological thoughts on atonement. One will also find evidence here for the feminists case (see especially Dr. Rita Nakashima Brock) that Abelard's atonement doctrines encourage pastors to preach submission to abuse of women and children (I am NOT saying this happens, only that such things are mentioned in feminist writings). One example which supports their case is:

'...where there is struggle, there is also a crown: "No one is crowned who does not strive (2 Timothy 2:5) For me there is no crown, for there is no cause for strife, no grounds for struggle when the thorn of desire is gone.'

Shortly afterwards, there is the line of Poetry:

'Afflict our flesh that you may preserve our souls.'

There is a subtle dialectic here between theology and preaching. That Abelard 'preaches' the welcoming of suffering, does that mean his theology requires it. This seems like an abstruse subject, until you begin applying this dialectic to all those Roman clerics who shuffled around their priests who abused children. It suddenly becomes very modern.

There is also a fair amount of social history here, as when Abelard discusses some of the abuses of monasteries who '...using hospitality as a pretext to set up building after building and turn the solitude they once sought into a city.'

For those of us who are always on the lookout for 'new' liturgical material, I suggest that few things strike me as stronger than some of Abelard's 800 year old reverential poetry. Like Hildegard of Bingen, Abelard also wrote much liturgical music; however only a small sample finds its way into this book.

I am a great fan of serendipity, so when the contents of a book surprises me, I relish it just a bit more. And, the quality of writing and relevance of topic makes this book worthy for all who examine the spiritual life from either the inside or the outside.

A superior translation and commentary. For the serious student or interested layperson of Medieval scholasticism and considering Abélard and Héloïse, in particular, William Levitan's effort is the most essential offered to date.
