About the Author
Natasha has been teaching Russian to foreigners for over 20 years, first in Ukraine and then in the USA. She has a Bachelor's in Linguistics and a Master's Degree. Natasha attended a number of teaching trainings, conferences and seminars. Before her career as an author Natasha was a head teacher and observed countless lessons, giving feedback to the teachers about how to improve the lesson, as well to the students on how to benefit the most from the program. Natasha watched many students struggle with learning Russian via complex textbooks that present a lot of material quickly and without allowing the student time to internalize the new information. She quickly started developing her own way of presenting the materials and realized that there is a very simple way to learn any language: just by dividing something complicated into simple pieces and mastering the language step-by-step. Her many years of work and experience culminated in a book series of her own - Russian Step by Step. These books are easy to follow and, at the same time, are teaching real Russian. In RSBS books students will find dialogues from everyday life, exercises to help master those dialogues, and texts to help in remembering them. The series has two branches: adult and children's books. The adult series is aimed to non-Russian speakers who want to learn it for any reason by themselves or with a teacher. Many hours of audio that comes with the course books allow the student to pick up the correct Russian pronunciation. Venturi Tube Designers should buy this book!

I was developing a venturi type device for an exhaust system. This book was clearly written and had all the formulas (and derivations) necessary to do my work. It literally saved me days of work (the answers could be found in an hour).

 In 1818, seven-year-old Elisha was fascinated by farm machinery. As a young man, he tried a variety of ways to make a living, but nothing fired his imagination more than the job he found in a bed-frame factory. Soon he invented a machine that made frames four times faster than ever before. In 1852, while overseeing the construction of a new factory, he had to find a way to move heavy machinery to the second floor. He didn't trust the hoisting platform, so he invented a safety brake. It was so successful that rather than lift machine parts, Elisha decided to build "people-hoisting machines." In 1857, Elisha Otis installed his first successful passenger elevator in a five-storey department store in New York City. Before Elisha's invention, buildings were never higher than six stories. At last it was possible to build skyscrapers!

Kulling gives lesser-known inventor Elisha Otis a lift in this latest entry into the Great Idea series. As a boy in the early 1800s, Otis enjoyed watching the pulleys and ropes hoist—and occasionally drop—hay on his family’s farm. After his grist mill, which he built himself, went bust, he found success creating a rail-turner machine for a bed-frame factory and inventing a hoisting platform for heavy machinery. Unlike the pulleys and ropes of his boyhood, this platform had a safety break to avoid crashes. But when Otis expanded his operation to make elevators that would hoist people, spectators were skeptical. A daring demonstration in the Crystal Palace of the 1854 World’s Fair in New York convinced the audience of the viability of elevators and paved the way for skyscrapers. Although it wouldn’t have been possible for Otis’ wife to “almost see the lightbulb over her husband’s head” in 1845, this picture-book biography gives a lively account of Otis’ world-changing invention. About the Author

Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, MONICA KULLING is a poet who has published many books for children, including picture books, adaptations of classic novels, and biographies. Known for introducing biography to children who are just learning to read, she has written about Harriet Tubman, Houdini, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Amelia Earhart, among others. Her book It's a Snap! George Eastman's First Photograph, illustrated by Bill Slavin, was the first in Tundra's Great Idea Series, followed by All Aboard! Elijah McCoy's Steam Engine and In the Bag! Margaret Knight Wraps It Up. Monica Kulling is also the author of the hilarious Merci Mister Dash!
 
Award-winning artist DAVID PARKINS has illustrated more than fifty books for children. He began his career at Dyfed College of Art in Wales, where he studied wildlife illustration. From there, he attended the Lincoln College of Art.

Hold That Elevator!

Monica Kulling's Great Ideas Series showcases forgotten heroes, inventors who changed the course of history but whose inventions we now take for granted: George Eastman's first photograph, Elijah McCoy's steam engine, and Margaret Knight's folding paper bag. The fourth book in the series tells the story of Elisha Otis and his elevator. As with her previous books in the series, Monica blends fiction and nonfiction to create an authentic historical and social landscape, as her poetic prose create very assessable characters.

"Going up!" shouts seven-year old Elisha Otis as he watches the hay hoist. It's 1818, and young Elisha loves watching farm machines at work. He carries this love with him as he - at nineteen -- moves away from the farm, eventually starting his own family. By 1845, Elisha is working in a bed-frame factory, when he is inspired to make a machine that makes bed rails more quickly. His bed rail turned proved so successful, he is put in charge of building a new bed frame factory in Yonkers, New York. As he built the new factory, however, Elisha didn't trust the hoisting platform; if the platform failed, as they often did in those days, falling machine parts could hurt people. So, he built a safety brake.

"Going up!" Elisha shouts to his men, as he began testing his safety brake. Once the platform reaches full height, he shouts, "Let it fall!" The workers are astonished as they watch - and the safety brakes hold the platform!

And then, Elisha gets a new idea:
"One night in 1853, Elisha sat bolt upright in bed. His nightcap was skew. "We'll lift people!" he shouted.
"Lift people? Where?" mumbled a sleepy Betsy...
"Why, to the sky, of course! To the sky!"

But people didn't trust the people-hoisting elevators. When the World's fair comes to New York, Elisha finds his chance to prove his great idea.

The rest is history, of course.

David Parkins, who had also illustrated the critically acclaimed - and one of my favorite books - In The Bag: Margaret Knight Wraps It Up, captures the personality of Elisha, from his knitted brow of concern as he mulls over the design of the safety brake, to his wide-eyed eureka moment when he bolts upright in his bed. Other characters, too - his sleepy wife, the astonished workers, the amazed onlookers as he tests his machine at the World's Fair - pop off the double-page spreads. Monica includes an author's note, stating that before Elisha's safety brake, buildings could only be six stories tall. Afterwards, however, the sky became the limit! Elisha's invention made it possible to build skyscrapers. This is an excellent read aloud about having the determination to make a dream come true.

Another fine entry in the series.

Reason for Reading: Next in the series.

I always enjoy good picture book biographies and Monica Kulling's "Great Idea Series" is a favourite of mine. She has a knack for picking the not so common inventors of the last 150 years or so. These are inventions we've heard of but the inventor's names are not always the most well known. I have heard of Elijah Otis before but if asked who he was I would have answered "an inventor" not really connecting his name with his famous and life-changing invention, the elevator. The book takes the usual form of this series which is comforting as each book is a welcome read when we know what to expect. This one skips Elijah's childhood very fast as by page three he is married, widowed, father of two and remarried as he sets off to try his luck in New York.

We find Elijah a studious man, who though working in a factory by day, spends his evenings designing machinery to improve the speed of the manufacturing process. Written with short paragraphs or two per page, each accompanied by large intricate illustrations that perfectly show off both Otis' character and the time period. We eventually learn how he comes up with the idea of the elevator, the public's initial reluctance to believe it was safe and the eventual implementation of the elevator in architecture and its direct influence on the building of "skyscrapers". Another fine entry in the series.

Not too Shabby

This picture book provides an introduction to Elisha Otis, famed elevator inventor. When Elisha was small, lifts helped raise the hay to the barn at his farm... but sometimes the rope would break to disastrous results. When he grew up, he realized that lifts could help move freight -- but only if there was no chance everything would come crashing down. He developed a safety break that went on to revolutionize the world -- making not only people-moving elevators possible, but also skyscrapers.

Otis's life and contributions are told in an appealing story-like form. However, the author uses dialogue in such a way that I could not tell if it was from primary sources or a fictionalized rendering of events. Unfortunately, there is no back matter to clear up the puzzle. There is, however, an odd poem at the beginning of the book that feels just thrown in there. Despite these flaws, this is an interesting and engaging book with appealing illustrations. I would recommend it as a starting point for kids wanting to know more about Elisha Otis, or about inventor's lives -- I just wish it had provided more information.

But what happens to those long filenames when you're at the DOS prompt? Nothing. Huh? Well, okay, you do have to work a little harder to see the long filenames, but they are still there. When you're at the DOS prompt, Windows 98 truncates long filenames so that they adhere to the 8.3 specification. Here's an example:

Windows 98 filename: This file has a long filename

Truncated version: THISFI~1

Both of these filenames refer to the same file. The second version is what you get when Windows 98 pares down the long filename to fit the 8.3 specification. Of course, if your Windows 98 filenames are eight characters or fewer, Windows doesn't pare them down at all.

Can you use long filenames at the DOS prompt? Yes, you can. Just enclose the filenames in double quotation marks. Directories are files, so they can have long names, too. Be sure to enclose the entire path in double quotation marks. Of course, you can always use the short version of the filename. Here are a couple of examples:

COPY "C:\FILES WITH LONG NAMES\THIS FILE HAS A LONG

FILENAME" A:\

COPY C:\FILESW~1\THISFI~1 A:\

DEL "THIS FILE HAS A LONG FILENAME"

DEL THISFI~1

Use the method that you are most comfortable with. Personally, I hate to type the ~ thingy.

If you want to see the long filenames from the DOS prompt, just type DIR and press Enter. The long filenames are displayed to the right of the file date-time stamp. If you want to see just the long filenames without all the clutter, type DIR /B and press Enter. You'll see the files listed in long-name format.

Loved the Journal. Couldn't put it down until the ending and now I'm still wanting more. Sin's character has really evolved in the Journal from the Box. I can't wait to see more of Dray. Can't wait for the Sword to come out. Would recommend this book to any teenager, male or female.

Fun and Engaging!

What a terrific sequel to "The Man in the Box". At first blush, I didn't think I was going to enjoy a story focused more on Sin than on Lou, but I ended up loving it and really connecting with Sin as a character. And the addition of someone like Dray is the dream of any fantasy reader isn't it? :) Loved this second book in the series and couldn't wait to read more.

About the Author
W. Bruce Allen (Ph.D., Economics, Northwestern University) is Professor of Business and Public Policy at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. For many years he was the Vice Dean and Director of the Wharton Graduate Division. He is an internationally recognized expert in transportation economics, and he specializes in demand theory and logistics. In addition to his duties at Wharton, Professor Allen teaches each summer in India and consults for numerous companies domestically and abroad. He has won a number of teaching awards, including the coveted Anvil Award, the highest teaching honor at Wharton since it is voted on by the students.

Keith Weigelt (Ph.D., Economics, Northwestern University) is the Rebecca and Morris Marks Professor of Management at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. He is an internationally recognized expert in business strategy, game theory, and tournaments, with articles published in the following leading journals: Journal of Political Economy, Econometrica, American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Business, and Management Science. Professor Weigelt has won numerous teaching awards, most recently the Undergraduate Division Excellence in Teaching Award and the “Tough, but I will thank you in 5 years” Award.

Too wordy, not enough depth

First I will admit to not reading the entire book, just the chapters required for a managerial economics class I was taking.

That aside this is one of the least informative books I've used in my academic or professional career. The main issues I have with the book is it is a very topical read (i.e. pointlessly wordy) with very little depth and like a lot of academic reads it really does not focus on application. (You'd think a book with Managerial in the title would focus 80% of its effort on application.)
The end result is a book that seems to make fairly simple topics sound complex and difficult while minimizing the complexity of more difficult subjects all the while not helping to improve your ability to make economic managerial decisions.

Never use this book

Truly one of the worst textbooks I have ever had to deal with. Nothing is explained clearly and the problems at the end of the chapters do not reflect the information in the chapter. They use *for lack of a better word* stupid phrases throughout the book (ex. Enough chat; let's get serious) that distract from the already bad explanations.

So, my minor is in economics, so I'm pretty well versed in econ. In grad school, Managerial Econ was one of my requirements so I thought it would be pretty easy, until I got this book. The questions, examples, and the writing - none of it makes sense to me. This is THE worst econ book I've ever seen. WORST. Hands. Down.

Originally published in the August 1956 issue of GALAXY, this novelette shows William Tenn (pseudonym for Phillip Klass) at the peak of his career in science fiction. Sardonic, profoundly disillusioned and fashioned in the form of a classic deductive mystery, the work was enormously influential and its central plot premise has been appropriated by others over many decades. Original to science fiction--perhaps to the entire body of literature--is the concept of penal terms served “in escrow”; a prospective felon is permitted to do the crime before committing the crime and for the service is granted on completion a get-out-of-jail free card. (Obviously those wishing to commit murder must serve more time in escrow than prospective thieves or embezzlers.) Tenn’s protagonist commits himself to a long term of penal servitude on a hellish planet in order that he may have the opportunity to wreak revenge upon the business partner who has betrayed him. As one of the relatively few who serve such a severe sentence in advance for a severe crime who survives, he emerges prepared to use his promissory note. What he learns however is that there are many levels of crime, many kinds of betrayal and much which is only apparently real. Written with deadpan, ungiving ferocity, TIME IN ADVANCE shows Tenn at a point where he had perfected his style toward apparent (but only apparent) effortlessness.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“William Tenn” was the pseudonym for his science fiction used by Phillip Klass (1920-2010); he is regarded as the finest satirist in the history of the field with an ingenious command of narrative. Tenn’s blend of compassion and ferocity, dark comedy and satire merged with the work of three other writers (Damon Knight, Cyril Kornbluth, Robert Sheckley) to create the characteristic voice of the magazine. After becoming a tenured Professor of English and Creative Writing at Penn State University in the middle ’60s, Klass virtually abandoned fiction writing, publishing only three short stories in his last four and a half decades. To reflect his importance to GALAXY magazine, three other William Tenn works are included among the 23 which compose the initial issue of The Galaxy Project.

Horace Gold led GALAXY magazine from its first issue dated October 1950 to science fiction’s most admired, widely circulated and influential magazine throughout its initial decade. Its legendary importance came from publication of full length novels, novellas and novelettes. GALAXY published nearly every giant in the science fiction field.

... Galaxy Project story I've read and it's a lot better than the first

This is the second Galaxy Project story I've read and it's a lot better than the first.

This time around: no typos (at least, I did not see any). That makes a big difference! The awkward gaggle of six separate introductions is still there, though. And the price is a bit high for a single short story.

The story itself is wonderful. It's nearly all what-if: what if a citizen could serve a criminal sentence in advance and then have the legal right to commit one crime? I haven't seen this proposition explored in any other story before or since.

The main character does experience two stages of epiphany and that is nice.

Although the story unfolds smoothly, it could use another twist or two. The ending is not fantastic enough.

The science fiction element of the story is relatively peripheral - one could almost reset the story in the old west just by substituting six-shooters for blasters. At a distance of almost sixty years it is hard to assess how original the story seemed then.To me the story just wasn't very compelling or original.
