Neeraj R Hatekar is Professor of Econometrics, Department of Economics, University of Mumbai. He is the Coordinator for the Centre for Computational Social Sciences, University of Mumbai. He has been the Smuts Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge and has taught courses on Indian economic development at the University. He is a prolific writer and has contributed to many peer-reviewed academic journals and the Economic and Political Weekly.

A must read for an introduction to Econometrics and R

This book is an excellent resource for anyone wanting a sound grip on the basic foundations of econometrics. Its lucid style is unique in that it applies the theory to practice, so that students can easily relate a concept to real examples. Also extremely beneficial is the use of R that is demonstrated in an easy fashion to accommodate even first time users of statistical packages. I'm glad I have it on my shelf.

I took Dr. Waite's class on Biofluid Mechanics and have kept the book for over 3 years now. I have found it useful at my internship, used it for classes in my Master's and now I'm using it for my PhD work. Love this book - small enough to keep on my desk as a handy reference. Dr. Waite was also a pleasure to have as a professor!

Great Engineering Book

I bought this book for my biofluids engineering class, and I am actually going to keep this book because it was really helpful. Usually, I just buy the book and return it after my course is done, but this book helped me so much that I know I will use it in the future. The examples are helpful, and the equations and concepts are explained in a logical manner. I would recommend this book to other engineering students.

In contrast to the scattered use of trees, he advocates the collective use of trees in groves, rows, and symmetrical units, and explains aesthetic principles used in grouping trees in a variety of settings. To emphasize the most important design considerations in choosing a type of tree, the branch structures of prototypical trees not in leaf are displayed in over 200 drawings and photographs. The same examples are repeated in a variety of contexts to demonstrate the effect of different design principles. The book explains why the science of plant ecology is of limited value in formulating rules for planting trees in cities. It clarifies the need to reevaluate the claims made for ecology in an urban context. Obstacles to effective tree plantings — such as municipal policies — are discussed, along with ways to change these obstacles into opportunities for better urban design and increased tree plantings. The book also suggests a realistic method of budgeting for tree planting and maintenance. About the Author
About the Author Henry F. Arnold is an experienced landscape architect who began his career as a land use planner for the Delaware County Planning Commission, in Pennsylvania. He then practiced landscape architecture for nine years as an associate and then as a partner in the firm of Dan Kiley and Partners and has since been involved in his own practice in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1970 he served as a consultant to the Ministry of National Development in Singapore. During 1975 and 1976 he was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Urban Design at Pratt Institute. Mr. Arnold studied forestry and landscape architecture at Pennsylvania State University and received his degree in landscape architecture from the University of Pennsylvania.

Essential reading for landscape architects and designers

As a practicing urban designer, I reference this book on a weekly basis. It provides a clear and concise understanding of how trees perform in urban conditions, from conceptual use in spatial definition to planting details. Many of Arnold's ideas were revelations to me, even after five years of training in landscape architecture. Unfortunately, the volume is somewhat dated, especially in its notes on current cultivar disease resistance. Still, highly recommended.

This book was a revelation to me back in the '80s and has greatly influenced the advice I give to clients and what I teach my students.
It is a 'must-read'for all those responsible for planting trees and designing outdoor spaces in urban areas.
