HCBW is a social history of the New Reformed Orthodox Order of the Golden Dawn during its first decade, from 1967 to 1977. The NROOGD was founded by a group of friends in San Francisco as a way to participate in the new Witchcraft movement begun in England by Gerald Gardner. The NROOGD ar first was a "Pagan occult study and dancing society" that held Sabbats in public parks in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1969 NROOGD members formed their first coven, which evolved into a family of a dozen Gardnerian-style covens during the next decade. It has always held Sabbats open to the public, a practice that help inspire the Pagan festivals that began to proliferate in the late 1970s.

In the mid-1970s, working with members of the Feri and other Traditions, NROOGD members participated in a series of extraordinary meetings that led to the formation of the Covenant of the Goddess, the first national church for Witches, in 1975, an event here documented in detail for the first time.

Although Aidan Kelly, one of he founders of the NROOGD, is the primary author, HCBW contains contributions by another dozen NROOGD members, describing their experiences in the NROOGD and in the Craft, as well as how those experiences changed their lives.

HCBW includes scripts for the basic NROOGD Sabbat ritual, which has influenced Craft rituals widely for the last four decades, and for the Sabbat held at Mabon to commemorate the Eleusinian Mysteries of ancient Greece, one of the NROOGD's most unusual celebrations.

Yesterday all my troubles seem so far away

Having a personal interest in Dr. Kelly's book I found the writting clear and the memories expressed far beyond what I remember. Authors license? or I'm forgetting things.
If you're interested in the craft and in NROOGD this is a good place to read about the roots of the organization and how it developed from a pot luck, beer and dancing group into a on going organization that has lasted four plus decades. Fast read. Lots of background information on the first rituals and their development over a short time.
If read closely you'll be able to figure out the players. All in all, if you are interested in the west coast scene in the and early 70, read the book.

New Reformed Order of the Golden Dawn

I bought this book thinking that it would be a about a revival of the "Golden Dawn", I was wrong it was about the starting of first an informal group of people wanting to learn witchcraft who then evolved into a coven and finally into an order itself. I like the story that Aidan weaved as I learned a lot from it. The only drawback is the seeming disjointedness of the book. Aidan gives his own narrative but then he spliced in interviews, pieces of rituals and then whole rituals. The information itself is all good and well but sometimes not easy to follow. Perhaps what Aidan should do is give us a tight narrative that incorporates the information given from his interviews. Another chapter could be about the rituals that his group did while together and maybe still doing now. People want to know.

Aidan Kelly played a part in making a tradition of witchcraft. He has also written several books about the creation of witchcraft and I am glad he let us know that for the most part Wicca and other forms of witchcraft are "creations" of the 20th century yet they are still valid. I like to know the truth and thanks Aidan for telling it so. I got to give him and his group credit as they did the research, the work, and they helped birth a very viable spiritual tradition. This book also gives us insight into the politics of the magical and pagan world which have as of late seem to have merged.

Aidan has come into contact with many heavy weights in the magical pagan world. To mention a few like Starhawk, Victor Andersen,Isaac Bonewitz, and Kerr Cuhulain, just to modestly mention a few. His group started out as a bunch of college students in the San Francisco area studying anthropology during the hippie days. Perfect breeding ground. They were reading heavily into that book "The White Goddess" and other Goddess,Pagan works. As part of a college project they formulated a ritual that seemed to go over rather well. From then on they decided to do it more often. they eventually coalesced into a group and finally into a coven with their own tradition. They had the usual discussion on how often they should meet requirement etc. The most interesting was whether to wear clothes of go sky clad. I myself feel better with clothing. They went skyclad. The coven would eventually come up with their own curriculum and advancement programs. White sashes and red sashes. White beginners and red more advanced.

As enough covens came about they eventually made it into an order the New Reformed Order of the Golden Dawn. Coven would open up and others would close. Eventually they would merge with other groups of Witches to form Covenant of the goddess. They would get together for rituals and for political action. During the group's time they did learn from Victor Andersen of the Feri Tradition. Starhawk also learned from them.

For Aidan he would eventually leave the craft due to alcoholism as there was so much drinking at the rituals and him being an alcoholic. he realized that it was killing him. After a lengthy absence he came back. He also did some traveling back east and worked rituals with Isaac Bonewitz.

Over all great book. Inspired me to what to learn more about Greek Magic and get to the sources as that is where it is at. I definitely will read more of his books as they come out. I wish some of his older works on Llewellyn would be published as well.

This is a rich and interesting account of the formation of the NROOGD tradition. Anyone who is a part of this tradition and would like to delve into its origins would do well to read it. Aiden Kelly does a wonderful job recounting this time in an interesting an engaging way.

Embark on the Quest of Duty

Get ready for a thrilling escapade - one whose perilous themes will linger in your heart for long after you've read it. It's definitely an improbable, bold adventure. If you enjoyed the previous two installments in the Men of Grit Series, you'll be certain to enjoy this novel.

This book was different from the other two books in the series, at least to me. It felt much more masculine, as if it were meant for guys. Horn's writing style has always been more bold and blunt, but this novel felt especially so. And the violence was definitely kicked up a few notches. I enjoyed it a great deal, but it does lean on the guy side as far as books go.

On a historical level, I was very happy! This book felt and was very well researched. I even learned some new facts! Of course, as a historian myself, I could quibble over tiny details, but they were a matter of individuality. Every historian has different takes on things. I felt the ancient Roman settlement was very well portrayed. (Hence my 14+ rating.) Topics such as abortion, slavery, and flogging were covered, naturally from an edifying Christian worldview.

I liked the story-line very much. It wasn't a "fluff" book. It was real, gripping, and young men in particular could learn a lot from the godly characters depicted. On the more controversial topics (such as deceiving one's enemy), Horn always explained from the Bible why the characters were doing right. One thing I liked was that this wasn't a happily-ever-after story. I cannot say I was surprised by the ending. Horn tends to give subtle hints about where the story is going, which I like. And the end portrayed the duty of true warriors in a very godly, honest fashion.

I didn't cry, but there were several times (especially the end) where my heart was pounding and I felt sick. Good books do that to you. They make you think and come away changed. This is such a book. I recommend it to historical-fiction fans, history buffs, and young men with a heart to learn about the true duty of warriors.

This is an excellent example of the literature this generation needs! It is a story that will transport you through time, and teach the true duty of warriors and Christians, the two being synonymic in this tale of high adventure. John Horn skillfully weaves his stories with the stuff the 'good `uns' are made of - adventure, intrigue, suspense, humor, and best of all, great characters that keep the Christian faith, and strive to do His will, regardless of the cost.

If you are having a difficult time finding good reading material, and/or are trying to keep your kids interested in reading, I recommend getting this book, and the other 'Men of Grit' titles.

P.S. Read the books in order!!! Brothers at Arms, The Boy Colonel, then Secret of the Lost Settlement.

If you like the writings of G.A. Henty, and are looking for a good adventure story with strong, moral characters, this is your book. But remember, you need to read this in the right order. The first two books are The Boy Colonel, and Brothers at Arms.
