Pronunciation section needs work

Let me start with the good stuff: this is a reasonably-priced guide that's durable and fits very well into one's pocket. It covers a wide range of topics (wider by far than we needed during our visit to Mongolia this fall). It has useful quick reference section inside the front cover, and a translation for common signs inside the back. There's some lovely art inside, too.

But. In my not-so-humble opinion, the key to any phrasebook is the pronunciation guide. Mongolian is a difficult language to learn, and perhaps the writers did their best, but it still fell short. For example, "thank you" is "bayarlalaa"; the first "la" is actually pronounced as an odd "soft T" sound, but this is not indicated in the pronunciation guide. "I'm sorry" ("uuchlaarai") is also not pronounced the way the guide would have you say it. I'm glad we had a Mongolian translator with us...

All in all, it was more helpful as something to point at than to actually guide what we said.

Comprehensive & well-organized

Mongolian seems so complicated, with its Cyrillic alphabet (35 characters?!), blizzard of consonants, and opaque pronunciation. I'm afraid I'll be reduced to pointing at the book, although I had hoped to be able to actually speak a bit. I wish this book had come with a CD, but it does seem to be comprehensive and well-organized.

Not an easy language nor an easy approach to it

I was looking for a book with key phrases for a traveler, probably using an easy phonetic approach. But, no.....that would be too easy. The approach is more traditional: let's learn pronounciation, then a fair amount of Mongolian grammar, and only then do we go to categories of phrases like Greeting, Small Talk, Accommodation, etc. The Language section of the Lonely Planet Mongolia (Travel Guide) is probably a better bet for my purposes.

KOONTZ AT HIS ABSOLUTE BEST

I've read many Koontz novels and for me he has always been a "hit or miss" author. Sometimes very good, sometimes not so good. The first time I read this book I honestly thought to myself that someone ELSE wrote it and used Koontz's name. Not that I had any idea how anyone could get AWAY with such a thing, mind you. It's just that I thought the book was so over-the-top EXCELLENT that I couldn't believe Dean Koontz had written it. Since then, however, Mr. Koontz has had several novels that, in my humble opinion, really knocked it out of the park - so he has indeed proven himself to be capable of outstanding writing. From the Corner of His Eye, however, will always remain my favorite. Not only have I recommended it to every reader I know, but I've read it myself - in its entirety - at least 5 times. For me, this book has it all: suspense, intrigue, excitement, and tremendous heart. Pulls every emotion from extreme anger to utter despair. Had me laughing out loud in places and bawling my eyes out in others. Incredible characters and every last little loose end and detail wrapped up at the end. An outstanding work of art here, folks - and a truly entertaining read. Well done, Mr. Koontz, well done.

This is my favorite Dean Koontz book

This is my favorite Dean Koontz book. I have re read it several times during the years. It is ALWAYS the book I recommend to people when introducing them to Dean Koontz. So far everyone that has read it from my recommendation has loves it. One of my friends grandmother who is in her early 80s (years of age) found the book on his shelf when she was visiting. He saw her sit down to read the preface before going to bed. When he woke the next morning and went to check his Grandmother... she has just finishing the book!!!! She stayed awake all night reading the book and told him she could not put it down. He was AMAZED that she not only enjoyed the book but had stayed awake reading for over 10 hours!!!!

This was his finest hour

Being an avid reader I have over the years, come to believe that each teller of tales has either consciously or unconsciously, a portion of the truth behind this physical universe we find ourselves in. For me, this is especially true with this volume. Some have criticised the lengthly descriptions as being overlong. I find them completely complementary to the story.

More and more, we are being drawn towards the subject of quantum physics, where, at subatomic levels, energy becomes though and effect precedes cause. Dean has pointed us towards the concept of faith and science coming together at this sub atomic level, and pointing I think to the domain of the creator or if you like, Supreme Being.

I think that a universe so complex cannot, to any rational being, be dismissed as happenstance. That we go on, either to other lifetimes or ascend to higher etherial levels must be given serious consideration.

Certainly this is a shot in the arm to seekers after truth.

In this volume, Dean has, in my opinion, pointed the way for serious thinkers, nay believers, to follow their own star to the level of spiritual perfection that we must all eventually aspire.

I do hope that Dean will be inspired to give us more of the same, so like the sower and the seed, some of it will find fertile ground and reproduce an hundredfold.

Since the launch of the first spacecraft in 1957, space technology has transformed our daily lives by introducing innovations such as worldwide telecommunications, broadcasting, weather forecasting and navigation. Recent years have seen a revival in the field of space systems engineering and astronautics due to increased reliance on space infrastructure to provide communications and navigation services, not to mention ongoing endeavours in human and robotic space exploration.
Ulrich Walter, a former astronaut and expert on space, presents in this textbook a thorough introduction to the physical principles underlying spaceflight and space exploration. Starting with the fundamentals of rocket propulsion and rocket trajectories, the author continues with a discussion of orbital and interplanetary flight mechanics, followed by guidance and re-entry. Ulrich Walter provides an understanding and insight beyond the numeric solution of equations by developing an appreciation for fundamental concepts. Moreover, he is not reluctant to study the possibility of the occurrence of life in supposed multidimensional universes based on the stability analysis of planetary orbits nor to investigate relativistic space travel á la Star Trek from a mathematical perspective.
This text is based on extensive teaching experience and work with students at the Technical University, Munich, and includes selected chapter-end examples and problems. The reader will learn how to solve a given problem using a network of formulas and astronautic relationships presented in the book. Astronautics is a textbook for graduate level courses such as Satellite Engineering and Space Systems Engineering as well as professionals working in space industry.

About the Author
Ulrich Walter, born in Iserlohn, Germany, received his PhD in the field of solid state physics from the University of Cologne. After two post-doc positions at the Argonne National Laboratory, Chicago, Illinois, and the University of California at Berkley, California, he joined the German astronaut team and flew in 1993 on board the space shuttle Columbia on the STS-55 (Spacelab D-2) mission. From 1998 to 2003, he held various corporate positions at the IBM Research Center, Germany, and in 2003 accepted a professorship at the Institute of Astronautics, Technische Universität München, Germany. Professor Walter became known to a wider audience as presenter of MaxQ, a popular science show on German television, and is author of a number of popular science books on spaceflight and research.
Currently, the main focus of his scientific work is on satellite technology.

Rare Gem

This is probably the best text I've seen on introductory Astronautics. It is written by an author who truly understands the physics behind spaceflight. If you want to learn the key concepts, relationships and ideas behind spaceflight, this is the book to start with. It is also great for young students interested in space flight: for preparation you will need an education in mathematics up to AP or undergrad calculus. An introductory course in physics would be helpful. The author has a rare combination of advanced education and very specific, relevant experience. I've put this on a shelf with Goldstein's Classical Mechanics and Misner's Gravitation; a rare gem.

Old Souls

Old Souls was an excellent story about fate, loss and love.

Alyssa Reynolds is an up and coming graphic designer at Young and Rubicam. For Alyssa, the story begins uneventfully but with a strange sense of foreboding. She has to deliver a presentation at a meeting that will be attended by one of the company's owners -- Mark Young. Sitting next to her longtime mentor and best friend, Colin, Alyssa attempts to still her racing nerves. However, she senses the foreboding and feels that her life is about to change. Then the vibrations start. Alyssa's body is positively alive with a strong vibration that she has only felt in a series of recurring dreams. The vibration grows stronger and then Alyssa comes face to face with its source, Mark Young. From that one meeting, Alyssa's life begins to change...never to be the same again.

I really enjoyed this magical novella. Alyssa and Mark were such likeable characters. And boy did I ever feel their plight once the revelations started coming so fast and furious. I love the twist with Alyssa's father...totally unexpected but very fitting with the story. The redux test was absolutely heartbreaking. Who could make the "right choice" in that situation?!?! But *deep breath* I so appreciated the outcome of the situation.

This story was endearing and sexy. Ms. Lupton definitely has a way of drawing a reader into the story and making them fall in love with her characters.

Steamy romance with a suspenseful, thrilling plot! A must read!

The author of this book is a friend of mine on Goodreads & while I might be slightly (wink, wink) biased because of my relationship with her, I do believe in giving an honest review regardless.

I knew nothing about the contents of this book before I read it except for the book's description, so everything about it was practically a mystery to me. Having said that, I don't want to give too much of the book away in my review to all of the potential readers out there. However, I will say - Old Souls is a thrilling, nail biting, steamy paranormal romance that will keep you on the edge of your seat for pretty much the entire length of the story. P.A. Luton knows how to reel you into her world by creating mystery in her plot to keep you obsessed with turning pages to find out what will happen next. The H&h's characters are well developed & their romance is HOT - not to mention the amount of passion & love you can feel with P.A.'s words that make you feel their emotions right along with them. This book is definitely one that I would recommend to any adult that loves paranormal romance, with hot sex & a suspenseful plot.
