What this book is not: a partisan (Jewish or Christian) account declaring the absolute historical accuracy of the Bible. What it is: a fair-minded exploration of this question of the Bible's historical truth. Author Jeffery Sheler is a journalist (religion correspondent for U.S. News and World Report) who relies extensively on interviews, onsite reports from Israel and Egypt, and a lot of library research. Instead of claiming to offer any startling breakthroughs, the book gives the reader an evenhanded treatment of this immensely controversial text. In a style that is clear and conversational, Scheler walks the reader through key moments in the Hebrew Bible and in the New Testament, exploring the grounds for the historical truth behind such figures as Abraham, Moses, and David, and behind such scriptural accounts as the Flood and the Exodus. Sheler retells the astonishing story of the discovery of the Qumran (Dead Sea) scrolls, and explores their significance for our understanding of first-century Judaism and early Christianity. Sheler, the religion correspondent for U.S. News and World Report, offers an even-handed examination and critique of the Bible as a historical document in his first book. Drawing on biblical scholarship, archeology, modern debate and the Scriptures themselves, and relying on his journalistic sense of balance, Sheler proposes that much of the material in the Bible is based on fact. Did Moses really live? The chances of pinpointing a single, desert wanderer who lived 4000 years ago are virtually nil, but archeological evidence points to the likelihood that many biblical persons and events were, at least partially based on reality: a stele fragment uncovered in Galilee describes the House of David, and ancient hieroglyphics suggest that the departure of the Jews from Egypt happened not in a single exodus but in several large migrations. As the book draws heavily on already published scholarly material, there are few surprises here, yet this is a minor quibble because Sheler deftly presents the arguments side by side, allowing lay readers to decide for themselves if the Bible is true. Particularly enlightening is the segment on the search for the historical Jesus, in which Sheler highlights Jesus scholars' ideas and personalities. Sheler's true strength is his ability to maintain a reasonably impartial perspective as he arrives at his conclusionsAmostly favorableAabout the Bible's veracity. An encouragement to my faith

I really enjoyed this book. I was prepared for it to be full of sloppy thinking and predjudiced conclusions. I commend the author for his evenhanded evaluation of the Bible. I was especially encouraged by the section on archeology. This book should cause anyone to want to read the Bible directly regardless of thier religious views.

I am 3/4 the way through this book. I like that it is written by a journalist rather than a clergyman. I think that lends more credibility to the text. It's very informative and not at all brow-beating.
It does get a little dry at times, and that is the reason I'm still working on it about a year after I bought it.

Yes, it's true...

But it takes open-mindedness and a willingness to avoid both the extremes of hyper-literalism and hyper-skepticism to see it. Jeffrey Sheler makes a solid, even-handed case for the basic reliability of the Bible. It is enormously comprehensive, which is almost a disadvantage given his ambitious thesis. All the ground is covered here: archeology, textual criticism, comparative literature, anthropology, etc. Sheler does cite mainly from conservative sources (such as Brown, Wright, Hoffmeier and Blomberg), but he fairly represents skeptical positions as well. I think some of these negative reviews on amazon.com reflect the fact that some people just can't accept the fact that conservative views might, in fact, be better supported by the evidence. Since they declare that conclusion a priori impossible, anyone who weighs in for that position must be biased or selective. Sheler's arguments won't convince those already resolutely skeptical, but they are not rationalistic or apologetic either. They represent a balanced, measured view drawn from years of careful study. Overall an excellent book on issues of biblical accuracy.

The book is a concise overview of the current controversy in use of the prayerbook. It is not overly technical and gives just enough history of prayerbook development to background a lay person in church thought leading to the problems of today. If the author has a personal axe to grind he conceals it well laying the comparisons out for the lay person as well as the scholar to examine. I found it very informative and readable. Its brevity alone kept it from a 5 star rating.

The juxtaposition of images is often remarkable. A photo of a girl waving from the back window of a Pennsylvania school bus appears beside a picture of a child in China's Yunnan Province, whose commute entails crossing a river in a seat suspended from a zip line. Many of the photographers (the images come from numerous sources) use light to dramatic effect: a soft glow illuminates the faces of eight girls in Gujarat, India; sunlight streams through windows as four boys stand at prayer in an Indo-nesian mosque. Supplementing Kerley's (A Cool Drink of Water) minimal, pithy text (Recess rocks! And so does lunch) are substantive concluding notes that specify the locations, provide cultural context for the photos and—most intriguing—offer occasional photographers' perspectives: the photo of the Indian girls was taken in a refugee camp (They were wonderful and full of laughter despite the terrible conditions). This is a stunning book of photographs showing how children around the world spend their day!

All around the world children begin to rise after the sun comes up. They get up out of their beds, wash themselves "and celebrate a new day." Mmmmm, it's time for breakfast. The children have many different kinds of breakfasts to start their day. Some have porridge, some have pancakes while others have churros or toast. "Hot sweet tea with plenty of milk" is a good way to top it off. Eight little girls with smiley impish faces are getting ready to head to school. Some children only have to walk a short way to school while others have to cross a river using a cable. Riding a bus or hopping on a bus is a very easy way to get to school!

At school it is time to get serious. Children around the world read, write, have music lessons, write math problems on the board, work on their science projects and dabble in arts and crafts. Of course everyone seems to love recess and lunch. In the afternoon there's more learning to do and then "kids stand up, clean up and head for home any way they can." Some children aren't done when school is out. They have to work, play, do homework, finish chores and then think . . . about "what's for dinner?" Of course everyone has something that's a bit different than the next person. When the sun sets it's time for family and then time to get to bed. Sleep well, for the next day will come soon!

This is a beautiful pictorial book that captures the daily lives of children around the world. Despite their differences, on some level they are all alike. As the author states, "Kids go to school, they play, they spend time with their families. This book represents one day, from sunrise to sunset, around the world-a day we share together." The photographs are stunning and very appealing. They capture everything from impish grins to beaming smiles (no crying here!). In the back of the book each photograph is reproduced and has a location and most have a "story" underneath. There is also a map showing where the photographs were taken. This is a book that school children will be fascinated with. How did you spend your school days?

I cannot think of a better way to express how I feel about it, other than to urge you to buy it or borrow it NOW. It is informative, educational, poignant, heart wrenching, jolly, lighthearted--the photos are beyond words.

To actually see how children around the globe spend their day--just amazing. it will make the American youngster sit up and take an interest, that's for sure.

I read this aloud to my kids. Then they wanted to individually page through the book and look at the pictures. Then they wanted to look at the last few pages of the book which tell where each picture was taken. It was bedtime so I made them go to sleep, but I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow they're eager to look on a globe to find where each picture is from. Excellent photos, and although the faces and places look different, the book emphasizes similarities in our day-to-day lives.

About the Author

Frank Schmalleger, Ph.D., is Director of The Justice Research Association, a private consulting firm and "think tank" focusing on issues of law, crime, and justice. The Justice Research Association, which is based in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, serves the needs of the nation's civil and criminal justice planners, administrators, and educators through workshops, conferences, and grant-writing and program evaluation support. Its most significant project to date is the Criminal Justice Distance Learning Consortium (CJDLC). CJDLC can be found on the Web at http://www.cjcentral.com/cjdlc.

Dr. Schmalleger holds degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Ohio State University, having earned both a master's (1970) and doctorate (1974) from Ohio State University with a special emphasis in criminology. From 1976 to 1994, he taught criminal justice courses at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. For the last sixteen of those years, he chaired the university's Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice. He was named Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 2001. As an adjunct professor with Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, Schmalleger helped develop the university's graduate program in security administration and loss prevention. He taught courses in that curriculum for more than a decade. Schmalleger has also taught in the New School for Social Research's online graduate program, helping to build the world's first electronic classrooms in support of distance learning through computer telecommunications. My purpose in writing this textbook has been to provide students with an appreciation for the fundamental nature of law, an overview of general legal principles, and a special understanding of the historical development of criminal law and its contemporary form and function in today's American society. Stories from real life, the critical placement of photographs illustrating cogent contemporary issues, and the use of end-of-chapter Capstone Cases are all meant to bring the law to life.

My approach has been strongly influenced by my belief that the law has always been, and remains, a vital policy-making tool. As a topic for study and discussion, the nature and life of the law is more important today than ever before. The challenges that face the law as it continues to adapt to the needs of a complex and rapidly changing society are highlighted in this text and serve to emphasize for readers the contemporary relevance of our ever-evolving American criminal law.

A central feature of this textbook can be found in its Capstone Cases, placed at the end of each chapter, which provide actual court opinions illustrating important themes in the law. Capstone Cases afford significant insights into the everyday workings of American jurisprudence, and they illustrate the logic by which appellate decisions are made. Law on the Books and Criminal Law in the News boxes, placed throughout the text, illustrate the multiplicity of legal perspectives found at federal, state, and local levels and make students aware of jurisdictional differences in the law. Marginal quotations, found alongside the text column throughout the book, serve to illustrate the inevitable link between matters of the criminal law and contemporary social issues.

Unlike most other criminal law textbooks, Criminal Law Today draws on the latest technology to facilitate learning. The World Wide Web site (prenhall/schmalleger) that supports Criminal Law Today provides a wealth of resources, activities, and ideas for both students and professors. Special end-of-chapter Legal Resources on the World Wide Web sections refer students to the Criminal Law Today home page, which is regularly updated, and to other important Criminal Law Resources on the Internet.

Finally, Criminal Law Today is the only criminal law textbook that I am aware of which is supported by a full-featured student study guide. The guide, written by noted attorney and educator Cliff Roberson of Washburn University, allows students to integrate the ideas presented in the text and facilitates the learning of what might otherwise be difficult concepts. The guide also provides a useful self-paced review and allows self-testing for students wishing to delve more deeply into the subject matter of this text.

Like any author, lost in the proverbial forest of words, it is sometimes difficult for me to get a clear view of how my books will be received. As the first edition of this book neared completion, however, I felt satisfied that I had achieved what I set out to do. That feeling came as I glanced over the observations of one reviewer who had painstakingly read through this book as it was under development. His final comment, after months of review, accompanied by well-placed suggestions, read as follows: "This textbook presents criminal law, which is as ancient as human society itself, in a fresh, modern format . . . one which will bring criminal law to life for students everywhere." for being required reading for me in my degree, it was VERY interesting! Has many case laws and studies. Even if its optional to get the book, I would! You will use it in your criminal justice degree as a reference.

It was in "acceptable" condition. I needed this book for school and it did the job. It was at a great price so very well worth it. All pages were there and had no tears. Overall very satisfied with my purchase.
