About the Author
Shamim Sarif is a novelist, screenwriter and film director. She recently wrote and directed the motion picture adaptation of her own novel, The World Unseen. She is also the writer/director of the feature film, I Can't Think Straight, which is based on her novel of the same name. She is the author of the novel Despite the Falling Snow. She lives in London with her partner Hanan and their two children.

Lyrical Prose

Shamim Sarif appears to possess the gift of writing verse as prose and the world unseen is a fine example of this lyricism. This is not great literature but it certainly is an easy read (I read it in a single sitting), drawing you in to empathize with the characters, rooting for them to succeed. It is a captivating book and I would highly recommend reading it.

At its core is the restrained love story between Amina and Miriam, both astonished by the intensity of their feelings and the common need to break out of their oppressive worlds. It is a story of opposites - of repression and expression, questioning tradition and blind acceptance, of courage and fear, of integrity and deceit, of finding a voice and finally of choices. What really evolves from this story are these broader themes, more universal in their appeal, underscored by each of its remarkable characters as small actions either in defiance of apartheid or convention, an arcane custom or simply humor in the face of adversity. This is possibly the book's greatest strength.

Sarif is smart enough to leave an open ending relative to the era. However, there's a strong argument for a more definitive ending - one that gives the reader some greater assurance of the relationship between these women surviving.

Perhaps the movie offers some better form of closure.

Amazing!

I absolutely loved this book. Shamim has such developed characters and I love how she writes one chapter through one persons point of view, then the following in another, it really helps to understand what is going on. Its easy to follow along, and I read it in two long sittings, you won't be disspointed I promise!

Excellent - But Leaves You Hanging (Kindle Review)

The World Unseen was a great read. The writing was smooth and effortless to read. The characters were sympathetic and well drawn, including several secondary characters. The prose vividly portrays the time and place in which the characters exist, bringing it all alive within the reader's mind.

If you're looking for a typical lesbian romance though, you may not be that interested. More than one third into the book the two women had only met briefly twice. The story follows their separate lives and then eventually weaves them together. The book is nicely paced, always moving forward. But it's not a fast pace. It's more of a slow moving river as opposed to a rushing torrent.

What I truly appreciated was the glimpse I was given into the ethnic and cultural conflicts of South Africa in the early 1950's. The story takes place near the beginning of apartheid, which was a bit of an eye opener for me in terms of its timing. As Europe and North America moved towards events that would finally bring about more racial equality, South Africa began aggressively moving further in the entirely opposite direction.

The only reason that I didn't rate The World Unseen with 5 stars is because I felt the ending was much too abrupt. I'm not one of those who needs every ending to be nicely tied up and everything clear. Vague or open-ended endings have their place in fiction and it's one that I can often appreciate. But in this case I was expecting a bit more and felt teased by the author. It didn't ruin the book for me by any means, but at the final few paragraphs I was thinking, "Hey wait a minute, you can't stop there!"

Kindle Note: Unfortunately, the Kindle ebook version is a mess in terms of formatting. I am returning the book because I don't believe I should have to pay ten bucks for such a poorly made product, even if the novel itself was excellent. Near the beginning entire blocks of text are indented. After that, indents seem to go away almost completely. This makes reading a chore, especially when dialogue is involved. There are also a lot of errors like dropped words, along with a few places of funky random formatting such as a few words suddenly underlined. I will be contacting the publisher in the hopes that they will pull the ebook and redo it and then inform me when it's done. If so, I will repurchase the ebook and remove this part of my review.

About the Author
Author Jane Killion lives in New Jersey with a houseful of Bull Terriers and a very wise cat. She breeds and shows Bull Terriers, has successfully competed with five different Bull Terriers and a Cattle Dog in agility and obedience. She has contributed several dog training articles to various publications and magazines. Her house is the frequent site of Bullypalooza days, which involve lots of people getting together with their dogs to train all day and then staying into the evening for dinner and lively discussions about dogs and dog training.

This book saved my relationship with my dog

I thought I was doing a great thing when I adopted my dog, a schnoodle, from a group who rescued him from a puppy mill. At two months old, I figured he was still young enough that I could shape his behavior and he wouldn't have any lasting trauma from his unfortunate start in life. I did my research and read many, many different training books and websites and watched training videos. When my vet warned me that my puppy was almost outside the "socialization window", I decided to sign up for a group training class. Ringo was one of the worst dogs in the class, barking in his ear-piercing tone almost the entire time. I didn't know that the instructor's method, relying on choke chain corrections, lures and voice commands, was doing more harm than good...until I noticed one day that the chain was ripping out the hair on my dog's neck (no wonder the end of his training sessions were the only times he sat obediently so I could remove that awful thing!).

I tried very, very hard to do everything the right way, and when none of it really worked I felt like an awful failure who had picked the "wrong dog". Or maybe, despite my lifelong love of animals, I wasn't cut out to be a dog owner at all. While my dog was capable of obeying basic commands, he would pick and choose when he wanted to obey. He was a hyper, leaping ball of energy whenever guests came over, and he jumped on me, too, when he wanted something. He was also very fearful. I had a love/hate relationship with my dog and often beat myself up wondering "What was I thinking?!" I was about ready to sign up for more training classes that I couldn't afford and that might not work when I happened to find this book. Thank God.

This book is different from the start. Unlike many other authors I've read, Jane Killion doesn't spend time stressing how important it is to choose the "perfect dog for you" or fill you with apprehension because a dog can be "ruined" if you don't train perfectly and early enough. There is no arrogant belief that the human can essentially BE another dog. No, this is a reassuring book that promises *any* dog can learn to do the behaviors you want as long as you understand the animal and have patience. Jane Killion understands how to work with animals and can communicate her understanding better than other experts I've read. One thing she mentioned early on that hit me with a ton of bricks was that trainers don't try to use corrections on killer whales!

To be honest, I wasn't sure I had any patience left, but during the first training session guided by this book, I realized that I did and that training my heretofore exasperating dog could actually be fun for both of us. Instead of seeing my dog's frustrating antics as bratty disrespect for me personally, I learned to observe what he was doing, including the very naughty stuff, as simply behaviors that he was experimenting with. He didn't know the difference between good and bad, he was just trying various things to see what worked. As an observer, I don't get angry with him the way I used to. I wasn't sure I was up to the task of training him, but the clicker/treat method Killion teaches is easy and really, really works. After a week, I have trained my three-year-old schnoodle to touch a box with his paw in order to get a treat, and that was done without me uttering a word or showing him what I wanted him to do (except with the clicker and treats). It's just amazing to see the animal's intelligence at work, and the mutual respect we are building is very, very rewarding. We have a long ways to go yet, but already my dog is calmer and has learned that pouncing on me and/or barking isn't going to get a treat. The attention and rewards he gets during short training sessions carry him through the day a happy, relaxed dog.

Jane Killion does a very, very good thing in emphasizing that ANY dog can be a good dog with understanding, patience and the right kind of training. While other "experts" emphasize finding the perfect dog and training them perfectly, or else, Killion's can-do attitude means that dogs of all types and backgrounds can be loved. There are so many dogs sitting in shelters who may be overlooked because they aren't perfect even though they could be great. Killion teaches you to work with the dog you love, not to learn to love the dog that works. Not every dog is a "Pig's Fly Dog", but I think this training method is perfect for every dog. Even if I wind up with a "biddable" breed in the future, I will use the methods I learned in this book. It's the best training book I've read.

This is a book written in a general sense,for a specific niche, which is surprisingly helpful for a much wider audience. This is a book for those with "untrainable" dogs, and also for those who have dogs standing on their heads in their eagerness to do stuff for their owners who don't know what to do with them. I can't honestly say there is new, ground-breaking material in this book, however the language is real and straightforward, the training concepts easy to understand and simply stated, and the descriptions of how your dog is probably thinking resonate.
I believe your dog will thank you for reading this book, regardless of what breed you have.

it is like walking into the door of a room from a ...

Grace Livingston Hill has a touch of the divine in her writing that seeps in naturally all about the scenes and dialogues and characters. When you open her books, it is like walking into the door of a room from a hundred years ago and imbibing the fineness of character and soul that fights for a woman's honor and purity with tenderness and strength of conviction that carries through impenetrable barriers with a prayer and a hope in the dark. When her heroines break forth into the light of a sudden victory over mean-spirited people who harass them and torture their souls, the reader feels like jumping up and dancing for sheer joy that the man of Christ has conquered the fearsome devils that threaten his lady, and they are free together to cherish one another in a heavenly and gentle nurturing that adds a nobility and benediction to all of their days. You will never be sorry that you read a Grace Livingston Hill book. I love her so much and have had so many uncanny, miraculous encouragement from her that I titled my blog after her, GraceLivingstonHillGirl.com and I find her example inspiring me every day with goodness and beauty even in mundane duties.

I loved this story but I was very disgusted with that ...

I loved this story but I was very disgusted with that mother of hers. She kept trying to get Mary to submit to everything she wanted her to do even though she had been through college and was of age. She wanted her going to all kinds of parties and Mary was tired of all that. She wanted her to marry this rich guy who always wanted to take possession of Mary wherever she went and Mary was tired of him doing that. She did not love him so she wanted to go spend the summer in a place where her father was raised which was the place she inherited from her grandmother and the town was named after her family "Arden". It was a country town and her mother didn't want her going there but even though her father was on a job in China for the government he gave her his permission that she should go. She had a wonderful father but a very overbearing possessive mother. I'm glad she didn't let her mother rule her life. The book arrived on time and is in excellent condition.

Gerard Loughlin is one of the leading theologians working at the interface between religion and contemporary culture. In this exceptional work, he uses cinema and the films it shows to think about the church and the visions of desire it displays.

In the figure of the alien, Loughlin finds a metaphor for that which is both most feared and desired: the body and its cravings. Secular culture follows St Augustine in thinking sex an alien force within the body. But the ancient church also found in sex the presence of a yet stranger desire that secularity forgets: the divine eros that is always other to us even as it draws us into its embrace. In God we find that which is both infinitely alien and intimate to ourselves.

Alien Sex explores the Christian tradition of 'sacred eroticism' – from Gregory of Nyssa to Hans Urs von Balthasar. Through a close reading of such films as The Devils, Breaking the Waves and Derek Jarman’s The Garden, Loughlin shows how Christianity calls us to view sexuality from the perspective of heaven, not in order to escape the body but to encounter it more intensively. Through desire of the body we regain paradise.

Scintillating...no, really

I first encountered a portion of this book in the controversial Radical Orthodoxy: A New Theology produced by Routledge (titled "Erotics: God's Sex"). There are some interesting essays in that volume, but Loughlin's was simultaneously one of the most accessible and one of the most provocative. Any theologian who can start a theological piece by pointing to the prurient preoccupations of Georges Bataille and then plausibly bring the trajectory around full circle to champion the Trinitarian eros of Dante's Commedia is a creative theologian, if nothing else.

Lieberman is a chemical engineer with more than two decades of experience in the process industries. She currently works as a consultant troubleshooting oil refinery and chemical plant process problems. Ms. Lieberman also has experience in ceramic clay processing, refractories processing, and the conveyance of slurry flow.
