About the Author
Martin McDonagh was born in London and has since worked as a playwright, screenwriter and film director. His first play, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, was nominated for six Tony awards, of which it won four, and the Laurence Olivier Award. Same womb as Lt. of Inishmore, different baby.

From the same writer as Lieutenant of Inishmore, McDonagh brings a hell of an English ride to the stage.

Generating the same crazy premises as well as the addicting dialogue, McDonagh hooks you and doesn't let you go until the end. Just like LoI, it's a roller coaster, but I think his themes are more identifiable and the message is clear; the justice system, wherever you go, doesn't really care.

The dialogue makes you cringe while laughing and leaves you gripping the corner of the book at times, the author has always had this effect on his readers (and viewers when it's produced into a play) and Hangmen is no exception. The pacing is (I don't use this word lightly) phenomenal. The message satirical but is built with more than a few layers of truth.

The only con to this play is that you'll be left wanted more by the end.

The latest from one of the two Irish playwrights/trailblazers, this play is HILARIOUS. Forgive the pun, but it it's uproarious GALLOWS HUMOR. I love this man's work, and can't wait to see it performed. It's a blast to read!

From the perspective of a thyroid cancer survivor

I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at age 25 and underwent a total thyroidectomy, followed by RAI. Over the course of the past three years (that's about how long I've been dealing with being thyroid-less), I have experienced everything from hair falling out, brittle nails, fatigue, heart palpitations, muscle cramps, and ridiculous weight gain. I'm not overweight or fat by any means, but I went from being 145 to 160 in a matter of months (and that's even with following a Paleo-style diet, doing 3 Whole30's over the past two years, and running 3-7 miles a couple times per week).

With my weight skyrocketing (despite watching/cutting calories, making sure to exercise, etc), I've been getting more depressed (despite my strong support system of my boyfriend and family, both who reassure me that I am just fine) and turned to Amazon to maybe find a book to help me. I came across this and bought it, not sure if it would speak to me since I am not hypothyroid by blood test levels (thyroid cancer patients are initially run hyperthyroid to make sure the cancer does not come back). But I was frustrated at FEELING hypothyroid despite technically being hyper.

Turns out that this book actually DOES pertain to me. The author mentions right off the bat that not having a thyroid, even if running "hyper" by blood test, you are still considered hypo. Not all of the chapters in the book pertained to me, but I just skipped those and focused on the ones that did. There's even a chapter near the end just for people who have had thyroid cancer.

I really wish someone gave me this book right after my surgery. It was SO comforting to hear the stories of the author (and others) going through the same things that I am right now. When Shomon mentioned that she tried cutting calories/increasing exercise and still gained 1-2 lbs per week, I was so happy.....because it finally made me feel like I'm not alone. I love the chapter on weight loss tips and how Shomon states, straightforwardly, that weight loss for the hypothyroid person WILL be hard. We CANNOT compare ourselves to others or what our bodies did pre-hypothyroidism....because that's not how our bodies work anymore. She states that it's downright unfair that we have to deal with this, but it's not our fault...it's medical...and we have to work with it as best as we can. Persistence & patience are key. While at some level I knew all of this already, it was so comforting to hear it from her; it really helped me start to change the way I think.

After reading this book, I feel more empowered. I came to it for weight loss help, but now have a better understanding of my condition (even though, as a science teacher/general science nerd, I thought I already knew a lot!). There were some symptoms that I have that I didn't even realize were thyroid-related....and it's just so nice to know WHY my body is acting the way it is rather than wonder what's wrong with me.

This book is a definite must-read for anyone who finds themselves thyroid-less. I am thankful I picked it up!

Worth the money!

This book has valuable information in it. I personally got real tired of arguing with my endocrinologist since 2009 so I bought this book and read it and told that Doctor and his PA which medicine I wanted to try which was armour thyroid, the generic is NP thyroid. It is a natural medication not a synthetic one. I realize what works for one person might not work for another. Proper medication makes a big difference. Now days a patient really needs to get informed about their medical condition and their medicine options so they don't fall through the cracks. Doctor's offices are revolving doors and more often than not they won't have or make the time to tell you what a good book will. What I learned on my own and this book confirmed was that fibromyalgia is related to hypothyroidism. The quality of my life has been so much better in the past two years. Thank you Mary J Shomon.

Good info but read with some skepticism

I am torn about this book. I read the first edition many years ago and found it helpful, but reading the current version left me with some concerns. Here are the positives and negatives, as I see them. For background, I've been diagnosed with hypothyroidism for over 20 years and have done the rounds of medical professionals including both GP's and endocrinologists in that time. I'm NOT a medical professional by any stretch of the imagination.

Pros:
* The author is a well-known patient advocate who clearly knows a lot about hypothyroidism.
* There is a lot of information in this book, some of which could be very helpful to new patients (as long as you read it with a bit of skepticism; see below).

Cons:
* The science is a bit dated, and the author tends to talk in general terms about research but doesn't provide a lot of actual studies. There are very few if any citations.
* The writer's tone is antagonistic and somewhat condescending towards Western medical doctors in general. She seems to imply that a well-informed patient knows more than an endocrinologist, and honestly I don't believe that's usually the case. (Although I have met some docs that made me wonder. There is a range of competence in every profession).
* The section on symptoms includes a broad list of all the things that can be caused by hypothyroidism, but not much information on what are the common issues vs. which ones are more rare. If you don't read it with some skepticism, every problem you have ever had could have been caused by hypothyroidism. (Or might not, because it could legitimately be something else. If you are busy blaming your thyroid, you could miss something important like diabetes or heart disease).
* She seems to write from a perspective that everyone should be medicated for thyroid issues, even if the lab results don't say so. This can actually be dangerous because being hyperthyroid has its own side effects, including osteoporosis and heart issues.
* The sections on alternative medicine felt to me like she's pushing these as superior solutions, without citing any research about safety / efficacy. Personal anecdotes are helpful but they are not a substitute for legit research, in my mind anyway.

I'm not a medical practitioner so I don't think that I'm overly biased. I do, however, like my medical care to be based on research, and while I do use alternative medicine such as chiropractic, I wouldn't have my hypothyroidism treated by anyone other than a medical doctor.

a good scholarly examination of Gardner's Wiccan roots

Philip Heselton's book "Wiccan Roots: Gerald Gardner and the Modern Witchcraft Revival" should be recommended along with Ronald Hutton's "The Triumph of the Moon" as a solid, scholarly examination of the roots of modern Wicca.
Heselton doesn't deal in unsupported claims about Wiccan history as far too many other Wiccan writers do. He sticks to the facts, and presents the results of his research in a clear, easy-to-read manner.
Like any good researcher, Heselton raises many new questions that need addressing while clearing up longstanding misunderstandings. The author doesn't pretend to have the definitive answer about whether Gardner really was just passing on an existing tradition or was instead inspired to put together the religion now known as Wicca.
Hesleton provides compelling evidence for the existence of a group of self-described witches who did in fact perform an initiation on Gardner, thus giving him a formal introduction to witchcraft. What remains to be determined, though, is whether what that group of witches practiced was anything like Gardnerian Wicca, and whether they did in fact have any sort of established pagan "tradition" which they passed on to him, rather than just a mishmash of occult and pagan lore.
Heselton has done the Wiccan community a great service. His book should be an excellent starting point, along with Ronald Hutton's "The Triumph of the Moon," into further scholarly research about our pagan past

Most Comprehensive Research on Gerald Gardner Yet

This book focuses on Gerald Gardner and his web of contacts woven in its entirety.
Compiled by perhaps the most authoritative researcher on Gardner to date Philip Heselton, the text is bound with wonderful illustration from the personal journals of Gardner's associates, including extracts and photos from the previously unseen Boscastle archives, providing the most compelling evidence of Gardner's connections with 'Old Dorothy', his High Priestess 'Dafo', and involvement with the New Forest Coven in repelling the threatened WWII Nazi invasion of the United Kingdom.
It is immediately apparent the author has not only researched current knowledge to its furthest conclusion but has also taken the brave step of educated speculation on other associations, which is sure to provide further researchers with useful data.
One for any student into the roots of modern Paganism and the Wiccan religion - Excellent.

Essential Reading in the History of Wicca

This book, along with Hutton's _Triumph of the Moon_, is essential reading for anyone interested in an accurate history of Wicca. Heselton provides solid evidence of the people and places behind Gardner's discovery / invention of Wicca, offers his well-measured conjectures, and fills some of the gaps Hutton alludes to in his work. For those of us interested in the history of the Craft, a very, VERY important little book.

Where was the proofreading?

While the book was informative, there were too many typographical and grammatical errors for a professionally produced product. It read more like a blog written by a non-English speaker. It was very frustrating to muddle through. Please fix these errors for future editions.

Emma Was An Idiot

I couldn't really get into this book because Emma was too naive....no she was just plain out stupid! The decisions she made weren't good ones and then her not being able to comprehend what is going on or what is being said was annoying. The fact that she was allowing for her child to live in the conditions that she did when she didn't have to......*rolls eyes* maybe it's the mother in me, but there is NO way I would allow that! I wouldn't care WHAT the father thought of me as long my child was taken care of. This book would have been ok but Emma was too stupid and Carson all of sudden becoming bi-polar and no longer the sweet man that she came to like....yeah this book was just all kinds of wrong. This author is slowly losing my interests with her last few books. They have been lacking and leaving me of less and less of a fan. In my overall opinion if you like strong heroine's or smart ones then this book isn't for you. If you don't care about the characteristics of the h then this book would probably be right up your alley.

I have to say that I'm a big KM fan and was looking forward to this one a lot. It did not disappoint.

A world famous motorbike rider and a girl who works as a lap dancer? From reading the blurb I was excited to get to the story behind this. I was thrown straight in to a awesome story of secrets, misunderstanding and ultimately forgiveness that was super exciting and fun to read.

I loved Emma. She is a young woman with a lot of responsibilities and has some hard decisions to make. Did I always agree with those decisions? No, but she is a great character with lots of depth and I can totally get where she is coming from. I love that Kirsty Moseley has a great knack for writing characters that you can truly connect with.

Carson was equally as good. He is strong and stubborn but has a softer side that I really loved.

There were also some other good supporting characters in the book. I particularly liked Emma's brother. He was awesome.

The story flowed well with plenty of emotion and romance with some added angst which I loved. It pulled me in from the outset and had me hooked until the end. The writing, as always with KM was excellent and I was sorry when this book ended.

All in all a great story from start to finish. I would definitely recommend it to all.

Different than expected but LOVE!!

Let me just start out by saying I am a HUGE Kirsty Moseley fan, I have read all of her books and I think she is truly talented! As soon as I heard Kirsty had a new story out I one clicked the pre-ordered!

'Poles apart' is definitely different from KMs other books, that's for sure but that isn't to say that it is a bad read.

This story starts off with us seeing into the life of a young women who has had a hard life, in fact still does. She works in a strip club to provide for her little brother and daughter, to pay the bills and go to uni, she often has to go with food herself to insure the others get to eat. It is not much of a life, but it will have to do for a 18 year old women who's parents want nothing to do with her and has a family to provide for.

Carson Matthews is a wealthy motor bike, racing driver who wants for nothing. He can have anything he wants, from the cars, the big house, to a choice of women. However his heart desires on women, the women who he sees weekly, the one he pays for. Her name is Emma Bancroft!

She was sixteen when she met him at her first place of work. Every week he was there. Little did she know he was at the club to see her! But Emma can’t see that Carson only has eyes for her. She’s been in love with this drop-dead gorgeous man since she first laid eyes on him but she doesn't think that he’d be interested in a girl like her. So she settles for what they have at the club, spending their time together in the back-room of the club. The back-room being meant to be a seedy place where the men come to the club can touch and have there way with the workers. However between Caron and Emma what follows is a passionate, tender, heated and loving night.

Carson takes his time with Emma, making her feel wanted and loved. It’s like there’s no one else in the world but the two of them. He cares for her, looks out for her, and the feelings and chemistry is so hot between them that the inevitable occurs. They both end up wanting more. What started out so perfectly, now isn't. Problems start stacking against them. Being apart doesn't help their fears and insecurities, and of course, Emma’s secret. Will their love be strong enough to stand up against it all? Now both their lives have been turned upside down. How will they react and deal with what has happened? Can love heal all, or will it destroy them both?

I do feel that there was something missing, not that the storyline was rushed but just that I wanted to see more into Carson and Emma's story. Possible duel povs might have been a good insight into the story, getting to hear from Carson also.

Some parts of this story are a little unrealistic. However that's what story's are for to take us into a world of fancy, and make us believe that anything can happen.

I have very much enjoyed this book by Kirsty, I LOVED it! I love her and I do recommended it! 4* Star!
