A different approach

This book appears to be listed under "management." It is, however, unlike any other management book I've even seen. To me, the average leadership book is mostly about cheerleading, fads, and selling the author's services. Very rarely do I run into any actual science.

And that's what puts this book apart from all the rest. It's based on the discipline of Evolutionary Psychology (EP). EP posits that some of the ways we behave and think and feel were selected through evolution. For example, humans evolved in an environment of limited nutritional choices. That's why we crave sweets, fats, and salt. While that was effective hundred of thousands of years ago, when these things were scarce in the natural environment, it's very unhealthy and counter-productive today, when these things are cheap and available everywhere.

These kind of mismatches are a central theme to Naturally Selected. As another example, when we were still on the African savanna, leaders naturally came from among tall, strong males who could hold their own against wild animals, rivals within their own tribe, and rivals from other tribes. Unfortunately, we still tend to think that way. That's why, for example, the taller candidate tends to win the election, get the job, get the girl, etc.

There are plenty of positives in this book, but I think it's rather unique in the way it treats leadership in a much more circumspect, wholly objective way. Another good example of this is the "babble effect." That states that the people who talk the most are typically recognized as leaders among groups of strangers (juries, lab experiments, travellers, etc.). I could go on and on.

Probably the biggest thing I got out of this book is what causes so many people (usually males) to want be leaders in the first place. It's mostly a matter of increasing one's status. From an EP perspective, increased status means increased sexual partners, which is how such a propensity tends to get passed down.

I actually came to this book from the EP side of things. To me, I think this is an excellent application of EP. I'm really curious to know what more business-oriented types might think.

Just as I always imagined!

"Naturally Selected" is the best book I've read on leadership. And, having a master's degree in leadership communication, I've read many books on the topic. I've always suspected that some of us are more genetically inclined to lead and some to follow - but that when push comes to shove most humans have some capacity to step up and lead. This was a fun, interesting and enlightening book to read. As a leadership communication trainer and writer, this book gave me a renewed and realistic frame of reference regarding evolution, history and where we go next in terms of leadership development. Thank you Mark van Vugt, PhD. and Anjana Ahuja for such an excellent read!

About the Author
Randolph W.Westerfield is Dean Emeritus of the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business and is the Charles B. Thornton Professor of Finance. He came to USC from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was the chairman of the finance department and a member of the finance faculty for 20 years.

Stuningly bad book! A terrible Kindle execution also.

As other reviewers have noted, the book is a jumble. I can't find my way through chapters logically, let alone see the logical flow of the book as a whole. It claims to have electronic links to things like spreadsheets and videos...it does not. All the links are dead. The publisher's website promises tons of content, and there's virtually nothing, and what is there is just fluff, not of any real use.

And finally, the book is not updated in any meaningful way since the 8th edition (I compared it in the library). Literally all they did was tweak the number in the problem section so you don't get the same answers. Every word of the text is verbatim, except for some very minor changes (they refer to different baseball players' salaries, or sales of expensive art auction items). So they published a "new" edition not cause there's new information, or to update the content in keeping with the 2008-present recession, or anything else of academic merit. The changes are basically cosmetic, in order to sell more books. Putting out a new edition was not just unnecessary, it was evil.

As for the Kindle execution...first, no page numbers. All books of this sort need literal page numbers, so that kindle users can follow along with the rest of the class. then, they only let you use it on two devices. One of the beauties of Kindle books is that you can bounce from device to device; your phone, your iPad, your laptop, your desktop and home and work, your Kindle, the new Kindle you had to buy because the old one got stolen, the new Kindle you bought because the newer models just came out...you get my drift. NOT with this book! You're limited to two devices. TWO! Utterly ridiculous.

In sum, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. If you have to, plead to get a used copy of the 8th edition, you'll learn every bit as much. What might be missing can be found on the web. Teachers...if you must assign it to students, at least have the courtesy to let students us an older edition, since the 8th is exactly the same book.

Excellent text

We use this book for both the undergraduate Intermediate Finance and MBA Introduction to Finance courses at University of Central Florida. This book is very easy to read no what your background in finance is. It serves as an excellent reference as well.
It seems there are a few people here who try to counterbalance each review that is awarded a 5-star rating with one that is a 1-star rating although their arguments do not hold water. My suggestion is to take a look at this book for yourself and simply return it if you're not happy with it. The fact the so many universities have adopted this text AND continue to use it says a lot.

This is THE book for serious study of corporate finance !

I am a student with science background. When I started my research on corporate finance, I had ZERO knowledge of investment and business ! I have tried very hard to swallow through the famous Bryley and Myers text recommended by my supervisor, and what I can conclude was : boy, is this how finance people write their text ? After beating about the bush for tens of pages, you still have no idea what they are talking about !
Thankfully this book by Ross and also another by Haim Levy save my day and correct my almost biased opinion about business academics (disorganized to the extent that can't even produce an honest and sincere introduction of finance with clarity and organized structure, that I sometimes wonder do these people know their work or not ?).
Really I don't know why some people discount Ross completely, because this is really one of the more decent and organized texts available about corporate finance. Anyone who wants to have serious learning about corporate finance should really take a look at Ross and also Haim Levy. Have patience and you will see where the author is leading you to. I am speaking from someone with ZERO background and experience in finance and business.

Generous, balanced information

For three centuries people have been taking important medicinal plants from the wild, but this book explores the much better way to meet the demands of a rapidly growing market. Persons and Davis provide state-of-the-art information on growing and selling high-value herbs such as bloodroot and black cohosh as well as the plants named in the title. There are plenty of stories from experienced growers, too, which helps to make this book remarkably enjoyable to read. The authors' emphasis never veers far from guidance that is both practical and profitable. Whether you want to grow woodland medicinals commercially or simply want to enrich your pocket of woods with useful plants, this is a treasure of a book.

The Answer to Every Question

If Gordon Cullen's book 'The Concise Townscape' were required reading for anyone entering an architectural education, the level of discourse on design would skyrocket. Cullen puts to words and images some of the more intangible qualities of space that nevertheless affect how we view our surroundings. It is, in my opinion, a categorization of experiences... discussing things like 'serial vision' (the progression of visual experience as one moves along a path) 'outdoor room and indoor landscape', 'looking into enclosure', 'viscosity', etc. etc. This book is more than a dictionary or thesaurus of spatial terms, however. It is primarily a book on experience- getting to the heart of how a space actually feels; how it is occupied, how it CAN be occupied, and what are the qualities that make it that way. If read for what it truly is, it renders the current fashion of architectural pornography rather silly.

And this, my friend, is where its true strength in Academia comes into play. Sexy renderings only take one so far, but your design professor has most likely read this book. Understanding Cullen's work will bring the discourse up, and move your work beyond a visual one-liner.

But that's just my opinion, and I could be wrong.

Cullen is a god of architecture

This book has changed my life as it relates to the "gambits" of making an inventive street work. Other books cover enclosure and ending the street with a focul point. This book goes into so much more depth. The challenge for me is to take these largely urban ideas and apply them to a suburban environment (where I do my work) but that isn't Cullen's fault. The qualities that go into a good street will probably never change. Cullen catologed them for us here 40 or 50 years ago and these ideas, the fundementals, will never change.

And the sports paraphernalia on offer includes rosettes "squealing the names of the players" as well as "tiny models of Firebolts that really flew, and collectible figures of famous players, which strolled across the palm of your hand, preening themselves." Needless to say, the two teams are decidedly different, down to their mascots. Bulgaria is supported by the beautiful veela, who instantly enchant everyone--including Ireland's supporters--over to their side. Until, that is, thousands of tiny cheerleaders engage in some pyrotechnics of their own: "The leprechauns had risen into the air again, and this time, they formed a giant hand, which was making a very rude sign indeed at the veela across the field."

Long before her fourth installment appeared, Rowling warned that it would be darker, and it's true that every exhilaration is equaled by a moment that has us fearing for Harry's life, the book's emotions running as deep as its dangers. Along the way, though, she conjures up such new characters as Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody, a Dark Wizard catcher who may or may not be getting paranoid in his old age, and Rita Skeeter, who beetles around Hogwarts in search of stories. Even without the unprecedented media attention and popularity her magical series has attracted, it would seem too much to hope that Rowling could sustain the brilliance and wit of her first three novels. Astonishingly, Rowling seems to have the spell-casting powers she assigns her characters: this fourth volume might be her most thrilling yet. The novel opens as a confused Muggle overhears Lord Voldemort and his henchman, Wormtail (the escapee from book three, Azkaban) discussing a murder and plotting more deaths (and invoking Harry Potter's name); clues suggest that Voldemort and Wormtail's location will prove highly significant. From here it takes a while (perhaps slightly too long a while) for Harry and his friends to get back to the Hogwarts school, where Rowling is on surest footing. Headmaster Dumbledore appalls everyone by declaring that Quidditch competition has been canceled for the year; then he makes the exciting announcement that the Triwizard Tournament is to be held after a cessation of many hundred years (it was discontinued, he explains, because the death toll mounted so high). One representative from each of the three largest wizardry schools of Europe (sinister Durmstrang, luxurious Beauxbatons and Hogwarts) are to be chosen by the Goblet of Fire; because of the mortal dangers, Dumbledore casts a spell that allows only students who are at least 17 to drop their names into the Goblet. Thus no one foresees that the Goblet will announce a fourth candidate: Harry. Who has put his name into the Goblet, and how is his participation in the tournament linked, as it surely must be, to Voldemort's newest plot? The details are as ingenious and original as ever, and somehow (for catching readers off-guard must certainly get more difficult with each successive volume) Rowling plants the red herrings, the artful clues and tricky surprises that disarm the most attentive audience. A climax even more spectacular than that of Azkaban will leave readers breathless. The muscle-building heft of this volume notwithstanding, the clamor for book five will begin as soon as readers finish installment four. All ages. (July)

Grade 4 Up-Harry is now 14 years old and in his fourth year at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where big changes are afoot. This year, instead of the usual Inter-House Quidditch Cup, a Triwizard Tournament will be held, during which three champions, one from each of three schools of wizardry (Hogwarts, Durmstrang, and Beaux-batons), must complete three challenging magical tasks. The competitors must be at least 17 years old, but the Goblet of Fire that determines the champions mysteriously produces Harry's name, so he becomes an unwilling fourth contestant. Meanwhile, it is obvious to the boy's allies that the evil Voldemort will use the Tournament to get at Harry. This hefty volume is brimming with all of the imagination, humor, and suspense that characterized the first books. So many characters, both new and familiar, are so busily scheming, spying, studying, worrying, fulminating, and suffering from unrequited first love that it is a wonder that Rowling can keep track, much less control, of all the plot lines. She does, though, balancing humor, malevolence, school-day tedium, and shocking revelations with the aplomb of a circus performer. This fourth installment, with its deaths, a sinister ending, and an older and more shaken protagonist, surely marks the beginning of a very exciting and serious battle between the forces of light and dark, and Harry's fans will be right there with him.

Very disappointed by my copy.

I was very excited to finally own a hard copy version of a Harry Potter book amd the package arrived on time and was in good condition. However, when I opened the book itself, I found that pages 333-336 were totally shredded. I was so sad at this because I wanted to start reading immediately. How can I fix this, Amazon? I live in Trinidad and Tobago.

I wasn't caught up in the initial hype over this series, but after seeing several of my kids and wife immensely enjoy these books I began to think maybe I should read them myself. After having attended numerous Harry Potter themed parties from such occasions as a nearby city museum's Halloween party themed around Harry Potter to a surprise birthday party for a daughter, Harry Potter has been a fun theme that has brought fun and joy to numerous social occasions with my family and friends. I finally began reading the Harry potter book series and find them as enjoyable as many of my favorite books from childhood like the chronicles of Narnia or the castle of Llyr. Thanks mrs Rowling for bringing such joy to me and my family and providing an excuse for a great theme to build memories around!

Do not buy Kindle version - defective

The Kindle version is defective as some reviewers wrote (I wish I had read them before I purchased), on an iPad with Kindle app in my case. When reading with the device held in landspace (side ways) position, the last sentence on the first column repeats at the beginning of the second column on every page. Additionally, sections of certain sentences are missing randomly. Oddly, this problem seems to go away when the device is held in portrait orientation.

I chatted with Amazon tech support, but after trying several fixes nothing helped and they are giving me a credit for the purchase. They also told me that this version will not be available for purchase until the problem is fixed, but I still see it listed for purchase. So, buyers beware.

concise, easy to read history

A Short History of Disease by Sean Martin is a very highly recommended concise, easy to read history that presents a good overview of infectious and non-infectious diseases.

The book begins with definitions and origins and then is divided up by time periods, from prehistory to modern times. "Analyzing case studies including the Black Death, Spanish Flu, cholera, leprosy, syphilis, cancer, and Ebola, this book systematically maps the development of trends and the latest research on disease into a concise and enlightening timeline." Naturally anything with such a broad scope is not going to contain an exhaustive amount of information covering every faucet of every disease. It does have a nice balance of history and diseases, including how society has handled them over the decades - and spread them.

Contents include: Introduction: Definitions, Origins; Chapter One: Prehistory; Chapter Two: Antiquity; Chapter Three: The Dark and Middle Ages; Chapter Four: The New World; Chapter Five: Early Modern to 1900; Chapter Six: The Twentieth Century; Chapter Seven: New Diseases; Notes, Glossary of Diseases, Bibliography, and Index.

I'll freely admit that I have a fondness for books on diseases and outbreaks of various epidemics or pandemics, so this accessible survey of diseases is right up my alley. I thought Martin did an excellent job presenting the history of diseases in a way that doesn't seem too daunting or overwhelming while including a wealth of pertinent information. As is also my wont, I was thrilled to see that A Short History of Disease includes notes, a bibliography, and index. I really liked the inclusion of a glossary of diseases which I think could be helpful for the novice.
