About the Author

Henry M. Sayre is Distinguished Professor of Art History at Oregon State University-Cascades Campus in Bend, Oregon. He earned his Ph.D. in American Literature from the University of Washington. He is producer and creator of the 10-part television series, A World of Art: Works in Progress, aired on PBS in the fall of 1997; and author of seven books, including A World of Art, The Visual Text of William Carlos Williams, The Object of Performance: The American Avante-Garde since 1970; and an art history book for children, Cave Paintings to Picasso.

Should not be called "The Humanities", but rather Western European Art History

I recently had to read this entire book for my Humanities course, and maybe it's just me and my definition of humanities, but I felt this book was less about multiple cultures and more about art history, specifically that of Western European and to some extent American. I think maybe one chapter was completely dedicated to the influence from Asia. Quite honestly I'm tired of learning things from a Western European point of view. Yes I am an Italian American, and even I am fed up with how much this perspective dominates our classrooms. To me Humanities is about multiple cultures and history from around the ENTIRE globe. The title of the book and the class shouldn't be so all encompassing if it's really going to leave out so much. I also didn't care to learn about history primarily through the perspective of art. Yes I appreciate art, but if I wanted to go into this kind of depth I would have taken an actual art history class. Maybe this sounds uncultured, but so be it. If you have to read this for your class, be prepared to memorize a bunch of crap about the history of painting and architecture (and a little bit of literature, but not much), because you will get only enough history to barely explain it's influence on the art, not a complete perspective to the happenings around the world.

Interesting and not too Wordy

Like many of you I purchased this book because it is required for a class. Although I probably wouldn't read it on my own time just for fun, I will say its an easy read. I hate when textbooks are wordy and complicated and you read several pages and realize you have no idea what its talking about. I found this one to be quite the opposite. It is by no means, dumbed down but it isnt so complicated that you don't want to read it. There are lots of images which is nice. I realize I sound like a little kid but im just making the point that for a textbook, its not that bad.

It's quite detailed and the pages of the book are thick, which shows that the publisher used good paper. The photos are quite clear and colorful. A marvelous book!

Seven Voices is a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes and meet Latin America's greatest generation of authors. I felt like I was sitting down at a table with Gabriel García Márquez or staying at Neruda's summer house as a private guest. I wish my professors had used this book as a companion text in my Modern Latin American Literature survey - it would have really helped me to understand the context that informed some of my favorite works of fiction. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves literature.

Nancy has written a great autobiography. Her story is heartbreaking, yet inspirational, as her life suddenly changes from a smart, beautiful, vibrant young wife and mother to one who is unable to care for herself or her family. She barely survives, experiencing pain, fear, fighting for her life many times and feeling trapped inside a body that no longer supports a normal lifestyle. Her courage and determination to constantly move forward, through many obstacles is heartwarming. Reading this book makes one feel grateful and blessed to be able to wake up each morning and spend that day doing everything we take for granted. I also believe that her story would be helpful for other quadriplegics, their families and friends to know they are not alone in their struggles and be inspired by Nancy's courage and strength. You will be amazed by her accomplishments. Buy this book, read it, and your life will be changed forever, too.

Great Read!

This book is an excellent read, especially for people who work in the healthcare sector. It vividly describes Nancy's physical and emotional experiences after a horrific car accident. In particular, it details her multiple struggles for healthcare (and healthcare coverage) that best met her needs as well as the needs of her family. I greatly appreciated Nancy's descriptions of how to best support people with quadriplegia in addition to the inclusion of questions to ask facilities who provide care for people with paralysis. Finally, I enjoyed the descriptions of Nancy's experiences learning to drive her wheelchair, which speak more broadly to her persistence, tenacity, and sense of humor!

Besides being an inspiration to so many people, Nancy also has managed to write an up-beat and informative autobiography.

I had the pleasure of meeting Nancy at the National Speakers Association of Colorado. My first thought was what is she doing here? The fact that she felt she could be a public speaker as a quadriplegic spoke volumes. I was amazed she wrote a book. She gave me a copy. I couldn't put it down. What drove this woman? How much research she did to fight the Insurance and Medical companies. What amazed me the most was her positive attitude and yes even her sarcastic sense of humor (which I love). This book will inspire anyone. As she says "No pity party here". I hope she writes another book. I know she will be a great motivational speaker. If someone were to ask me how to describe Nancy Blose after reading her book - I would use the word Tenacious !!!!

The Mariner's Chronometer

The Mariner's Chronometer is perhaps the best book on the subject currently available for the amateur. The explanations are clear; the English plain and to the point; key concepts properly illustrated. The book is up to date with a useful select bibliography. There is a fine summary on the chronometer's general development written from an engineering perspective which balances recent popular accounts. Mr Morris stands in the tradition of the great gentleman amateur Rupert T Gould and whilst respectful of professional horology is not in awe of it. He is not afraid to explain clearly to the reader how to open and repair these marvelous machines and he is obviously up to the task with rates of a second a day (ours is gaining five). My hope is that Mr Morris will go on and update Gould with the definitive study of the subject for the early 21C.

Excellent practical manual

A couple of other reviewers were doubtful that this book is sufficient help for the inexperienced in clock repair to service a chronometer. However, I bought a Russian chronometer that suffered badly in the post and had no other option than attempt repairs myself - so with book in hand I dismantled, cleaned and reassembled the chronometer, which is currently ticking on my bench. You will have to modify screwdrivers, and buy tools for pulling hands and gears. There are some tricky points - I had trouble pulling the cannon pinion, and replacing the detent was a bit nerve-wracking. There is one minor omission in the reassembly instructions and sometimes I wished for an extra picture - nonetheless, I'd never serviced a clock before and I now have a working chronometer, so the book delivers on its promise

The book gives a very clear account of the structure of the marine chronometer and the overhaul chapters are especially good. I don't know of any other book that gives so much detail. They should be valuable not only to the enthusiastic amateur but also to the non-specialized professional.
But I would take with a pinch of salt the author's implication that anyone "who is not all thumbs" could attempt overhaul. It would be better to get in some practice first. The history chapter interestingly looks at the chronometer as an evolving instrument, rather than giving a social history, and balances some of the British hype about Harrison by giving a lot of detail from French sources.

The original diagrams are very clear, so are the many color photos, with the exception of a slightly fuzzy one on page 23. There is a drafting error in figure 2.1 of my copy which misplaces the second hand, but its correct position is given on the following page.

Overall a very useful contribution to the literature on chronometers, but chronometer professionals I think will hate it, since it dispels much of the mystique that surrounds the instrument.
